I say just find somethings you are interested in and do your proper preflight. There are lots of apps that assist and some even will show you where the local aircraft are. Know the rules of the road in the area you're going to fly in. If you're new, stay close to you, and stay away from things that you can hurt. Stay clear of big metal things I have had the spark in atti mode over large metal objects. But Oakley Brentwood area you have lots of fun fields and farms (Avoid the airspace around Byron Airport). Use Google Earth to find some fun spots.
